A rather unconventional start to our exclusive interview with Matthew Hudson-Smith occurred just after the 400m runner stormed to the British men’s title at the UK Championships and Olympic Trials on a cold and wet summer’s day in Manchester in June.
“Matthew, first of all, I’m concerned that your laces are undone. I don’t want you to trip over!”
The fastest one-lap runner in European history laughed.
“You’re not the only one who’s said that,” he said with a grin, before kneeling down to do up said laces in the mixed zone at the Manchester Regional Arena, the venue sat squat beside the behemoth that is Manchester City’s football stadium.
